This is music, first and foremost, far from exhibitionism and gratuitous virtuosity. You only need to see the posture of the musicians before they are carried away in their music. Trumpeter Wallace Roney's quintet adopts a syntax that harks back to the splendors of the Jazz Messengers. Roney, who played in the Big Band and Quintet formations of Art Blakey and Tony Williams, has learned his lesson well. More than his superbly fleshed-out, emotionally charged and densely sonorous solos, it is his leadership of the quartet where Rooney’s experience is undeniable. Carried along by a flawless rhythm section, it's square, solid and always swinging, in a form of classicism that doesn't shirk the idioms of its time. Pianist Oscar Williams and saxophonist Emilio Modeste, with the allure of fragile kids, add a more modernist touch. Influenced by Mulgrew Miller, Oscar Williams seems to be the group's rebel child: always escaping from imposed atmospheres. His sometimes romantic, often scintillating playing infuses the group with that innovative touch that would not shock the likes of Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea.
