The Comet is Coming is not only one of the cooler band names of recent history, it also speaks to the effect that one of its members and the circle around him has had on the modern British jazz/improvised music scene and beyond. Saxophonist/reed and windplayer Shabaka Hutchings has left a deep and ever-expanding artistic crater over the past decade-plus with his various collaborations and projects. Like a modern day Joe Harriott, the England-born, Barbados-raised Hutchings is the latest of many West Indians musicians to become integral to the U.K. jazz scene. He is also a key figure in the relaunched and revitalized Impulse label, which has released albums not only by The Comet is Coming but also his bands Sons of Kemet, Shabaka & The Ancestors and, most recently, two solo dates. The Comet is Coming is a natural extension of another seminal Impulse artist in John Coltrane and, more specifically, his saxophone-drums duet album Interstellar Space. Adding to the primal explorations of King Shabaka and drummer Betamax (aka Maxwell Hallett, also Sons of Kemet) is the keyboards and electronics of Danalogue (Dan Leavers). Think space jazz, dubstep and free house swirling around one another, definitely music for an all-night rave rather than a staid concert hall. But genre assigments are ultimately irrelevant for this band. This is music of the cosmos: SETI communiqués, dark wave undulations, maybe even what the cantina at Mos Eisley is featuring these days. The Comet isn’t coming…it’s right on top of you.
