An "Afrobeat Night" was how it was described – and inevitably, there will be a sense of homage to the occasion. Seun Kuti, leader of his father’s group Egypt 80 (named to highlight the ancient Egyptian knowledge systems and to claim them as African) starts every gig with one of Fela’s songs, this time "Mr. Follow Follow," as a "sign of respect to the man." But in recent years, Seun’s own presence has been growing. His charisma is evident and, with new messages to offer, he is earning the right to be known as "A super heavyweight champion" as his introduction suggests. Fittingly, it is a full 12 minutes before he comes on stage, and the audience is given the gift of a "very special" introduction: Afrobeat at its best. We get sharp, polyrhythmic drums, an array of percussion, and funk guitars that slow-cook the groove. Then, as expected, majestic horns splash color into the mix alongside chanted vocals and ceaseless energy. Indeed, Seun’s gigs are always fabulous performances, and this one is no different. He plays the sax with the same conviction as he denounces Christ, replacing Christianity’s message with the wisdom of his African ancestors.
