Marcus Miller (born June 14, 1959) is an American bassist and record producer. He has worked on more than 500 projects, including his own work. Miller is best known for his career as a bass guitarist where he practices the 'slapping technique', also known as slapping bass. He also plays piano, bass clarinet, and soprano saxophone. He has produced for many musicians, including David Sanborn, his saxophonist Kenny Garrett and Lalah Hathaway, daughter of the famous singer Donny Hathaway. Miller comes from a musical family: his father played the organ in the church and conducted the choir there. His uncle Wynton Kelly was Miles Davis' jazz pianist in the late 1950s and early 1960s. At the age of thirteen, Miller was already quite proficient on piano, clarinet and bass guitar and he started to make compositions himself. At the age of fifteen he was already playing regularly with various bands in New York. Shortly afterwards he played and wrote songs for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith. In the following years, he worked as the most in-demand session musician and has worked for celebrities such as Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Grover Washington Jr. and David Sanborn. He appeared on more than 400 records as a bassist and collaborated on songs by Joe Sample, McCoy Tyner, Bill Withers, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Jay-Z and LL Cool J, among others. From 1981 to 1983, Miller toured as a member of the band of his childhood hero Miles Davis. According to Miller, it was Davis who helped develop his style. After working as a producer for musicians for some time, Miller began working with Miles Davis again and was allowed to produce three Miles Davis' albums with Tutu as the first. In 1993, Miller began his solo career and released the album The Sun Don't Lie. It was clear that the bass guitar could also be played differently, question-and-answer bass lines could be heard in combination with a lot of funk and soul. In 1995 Tales was released where jazz and blues were central. This was followed by the live album Live and More in 1997 and M2 in 2001. From 1990 Miller focused a lot on producing film music for House Party, Boomerang, Siesta and Ladies Man, for example. On January 26, 2015, the documentary Marcus, the film about his life was released, with the cooperation of Ahmad Jamal, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Washington and Larry Graham.
