A leader of his own bands since 1989, Tom Harrell stars as one of jazz’s foremost trumpeters. He has been nominated for Grammys, has been the top-seated trumpeter of numerous DownBeat magazine Critics Polls and in 2018 he was bestowed the trumpeter of the year honors by the Jazz Journalists Association. Newsweek magazine once called him a musician with "pure melodic genius." In this 2011 concert at Live Jazz à Junas, Harrell—with his sun-glassed head tilted down—and his quintet put on a sublime performance of music from The Time of the Sun album that had been released a month earlier on HighNote Records. In a recorded statement from an interview with Harrell that serves as an introduction, he says, "For an artist, a musician, everything is an inspiration. If it’s positive or even if it’s negative, you can transform an experience into something beautiful." Beauty is in the pulse of this set of uptempo and balladic material including the gem "Obsession" and the post-bop "River Samba" inflected with a Brazilian flavor. Historically Harrell has recorded a broad range of material, including big bands and chamber orchestras. But he seems quite at home in a quintet setting, especially since he’s composing and leading with simpatico band mates—tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Johnathan Blake. The chemistry among the five players underscores the show. At various points, Harrell gives insight into his music: "Everyone has the cry…the soulful music of the people contains that cry" and "One of [my] goals is to be different and new." Indeed on both counts.
