Charles Lloyd (born March 15, 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American tenor saxophonist and flute player. Lloyd received piano lessons from Phineas Newborn at the age of nine. In 1956, Lloyd moved to Los Angeles to study music at the University of Southern California. Many jazz musicians could be found in that city, such as Buddy Collette and Ornette Coleman. During his stay there he played in a big band of Gerard Wilson. From 1960 to 1963 he played in Chico Hamilton's band, in which he increasingly emerged as a composer of post-bop compositions. In 1964 he moved on and started playing at Cannonball Adderley. Around that time, the first music albums were made by him; fellow musicians are Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. During the years 1966-1968 Lloyd played in a quartet with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee/Ron McClure and Jack DeJohnette. The music then leans more towards the free jazz style. The album Forest Flower even became a hit within the jazz world. After 1968, Lloyd partially retired from the active jazz music scene and became a saxophonist with The Beach Boys and the band Celebration (consisting of former Beach Boys members).
