Joshua Redman (born February 1, 1969 in Berkeley, California) is a jazz saxophonist. He graduated summa cum laude in social studies from Harvard University in 1991, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. That same year he also won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, after which he started to focus entirely on his musical career. He is one of the most prominent representatives of neo-bop in contemporary jazz. Joshua Redman's debut CD Wish was recorded with jazz greats Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny. Then in 1994 he starts his own quartet which is said to have been one of the most successful combinations of the past 2 decades. His three bandmates, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade have all grown into bandleaders and belong to the top in contemporary jazz with their own ensembles.
