When you review all the styles that the Israeli bassist has explored since his beginnings in Chick Corea's trio and Origin group in the 1990s, before becoming one of the biggest names in world jazz in just a few years, you almost forget the pivotal importance he has had on the global jazz scene. It must be said that Avishai Cohen has tried almost everything: all kinds of fusion, recordings with a symphony orchestra, film scores, and even songwriting. But it is largely thanks to him that his country is now known as the rich breeding ground for composers and improvisers that it is, where he has discovered and nurtured a myriad of instrumentalists who have subsequently flown the nest and written their own stories, such as pianists Shai Maestro, Nitai Hershkovits, and Omri Mor, or drummer Mark Guiliana.

For the past few years, he has been bringing together the new generation of Israeli instrumentalists who share his taste for genre mixing and experimentation, and his most recent album Brightlight proves that the flair of this tireless leader and talent scout is intact.
