John Wardle (born 11 August 1958), better known by his stage name Jah Wobble, is an English bassist, songwriter and poet. He began his career as a bassist in 1978 with the band Public Image Ltd. (PiL), which was founded that year by his childhood friend John Lydon, the frontman of the Sex Pistols. In PiL, Wobble, who played bass guitar for the first time, made a special form of dance music: a rousing funk rhythm, deep bass grooves in the dub tradition, and angular guitar playing interspersed with electronic effects. This style later became Wobble's trademark. However, playing in a band was far too limiting for the talented Wobble, so he left PiL after only two years to start a successful solo career. From 1980 onwards, Wobble further expanded the dub character. With his best-known band Invaders Of The Heart, but also sporadically with the help of Holger Czukay (Can), he combines repetitive dub basses with Arabic melodies, sultry vocals, African percussion and electronic sound carpets. In 1981 he scored a hit with 'How Much Are They'. This was taken from his album "Full Circle" which he had recorded with Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. Wobble feels at home in many genres: reggae, dub, world music, post-punk, Arabic music, folk, ambient, pop, jazz and electronic music. He has collaborated with international artists such as The Edge, Primal Scream, Brian Eno, Sinéad O'Connor, Peter Gabriël and The Orb.
