Linda Viera Caballero (born March 9, 1969), better known by her stage name La India, is a Puerto Rican-American singer of salsa, Latin pop, and house music. Cabellero grew up in New York with her grandmother; she was nicknamed India because of her dark skin and long black hair. Caballero started singing at a young age and took several opera lessons, among other things. In her teens, she was part of the Latin hip-hop group TKA, with which she released two singles in 1985. Caballero signed a contract with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records that wanted to launch her as a Latino version of Madonna, but she didn't like it. She preferred to record house songs with her first husband "Little" Louie Vega. In 1990, Caballero released her first solo album (Breaking Night), on which two songs were produced by Kurtis Mantronik. Caballero didn't want to continue in house and switched to salsa. She signed a contract with RMM, on which she released a CD with pianist Eddie Palmieri in 1992; Llego La India via Eddie Palmieri was named one of the best salsa albums of that year. In 1993 Caballero released the EP Love and Happiness (Yemaya y Ochún). However, the fact that she incorporated influences from the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion was not appreciated.
