Current episode synopsis: Sun Ra, one of the most eccentric figures in 20th-century music, formed his ten-piece big band, the Arkestra, in the mid-1950s, which debuted with the album Sun Song in 1956. Originally playing a unique, eccentric bebop in arrangements that showed influences from Duke Ellington and Tadd Dameron, the Arkestra had evolved by the early 1960s into the most progressive and experimental band of the era. Sun Ra was one of the first bandleaders to use two basses, to use electric bass, to play electronic keyboards, to expand the use of percussion, to expand on the benefits of polyrhythm, to explore modal music, and to pioneer free improvisation, both solo and in ensemble work. Today, under the leadership of the band's legendary saxophonist, Marshall Allen, the Sun Ra Arkestra continues its cosmic mission with unbroken, fantastic spiritual energies.
