A brilliant iconoclast, Kamasi Washington puts his favorite instrument (the saxophone) and jazz to the test. He demonstrates this by example in the enchanting setting of the TSF Jazz Chantilly Festival.
Known for the fratricidal struggles between Bloods and Crips, the Californian city of Inglewood doesn't, at first glance, seem like the ideal breeding ground for the revival of American jazz. That's without counting on Kamasi Washington, a local boy, who strives to bring jazz out of the hushed salons and into the streets.
A bold gamble, made possible by the saxophonist's numerous connections with the American hip-hop scene: from Snoop Dogg to Lauryn Hill, Run the Jewels, and Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington has multiplied his collaborations with figures whose street cred is undeniable.
With Fearless Movement, his 2024 album, Kamasi Washington soars even higher and is more spiritual than ever. It's a record that combines nods to John Coltrane with influences from funk, hip-hop, and soul, which the Californian performs for a Chantilly audience.
