Candy Dulfer (born September 19, 1969 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch saxophonist. Candy Dulfer is the daughter of Hans Dulfer, also a famous saxophonist. She performed with her father at a young age. At the age of 11, she made her first record with him. As a young girl, she also played in small venues with Rosa King, a well-known saxophonist. In 1982, Dulfer performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival with her band Own Cultivation at the age of 13. With drummer Joost Kesselaar, bassist Tom Jaburg (brother of the equally famous Bas Jaburg), guitarist Eddy Polak (Tup) and trumpeter/singer Winfried Splinter, she wrote history: the Faya Lobbi hall was packed to see the youngest band in the history of the North Sea. Two years later she founded her own band, Funky Stuff. Soon after that she performed regularly on radio and television. She also played on the soundtrack of Een maand later, a Dutch film by Nouchka van Brakel. In 1987 Dulfer played as the opening act for Madonna at the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam. Later Prince also asked her to perform as the opening act for his concerts in the Netherlands. Three days before the performance Prince unexpectedly cancelled Funky Stuff. After an angry letter from Dulfer, she was allowed to play a song with him. This made such an impression on Prince that he asked her to work with him on a few projects in the United States. In 1989, Dulfer made a few songs with Dave Stewart, guitarist of Eurythmics. One of these songs, Lily was here, the title track of the Dutch feature film De kassière, became a number 1 hit in the Netherlands at the end of 1989. Dulfer made a guest appearance with Pink Floyd at the festival “Live at Knebworth” in 1990. In that year, a debut solo album was released, entitled Saxuality. This album, of which more than a million copies were sold worldwide, contained several major hits. During these years, Dulfer won an Export Prize three times, including for Saxuality. In 1993, the album Sax-a-go-go was released. The single of the same name was voted the very first megahit of the week on Radio 3 on Sunday 31 January 1993 and gave Dulfer another top 10 hit in the Dutch Top 40. In the Mega Top 50, the record reached the 12th position. The album was followed in 1995 by Big girl, the title of which was a nod to an earlier album of her father, called Big boy. Dulfer played again with Prince and Van Morrison during their concerts. She played on several Prince productions and appeared in his video clip of the single Partyman. The fourth studio album For the love of you was released in 1997 and included contributions from Trijntje Oosterhuis and Berget Lewis, among others. With her father Hans she had a guest role on the album Some Love (2001) by Soulvation. The album was a success in the Netherlands, Japan and the US. In the following years the albums Girls night out, Live in Amsterdam and Right in my soul followed, with varying success. In 2005 Dulfer played on several songs on the album Grip by Lohues & the Louisiana Blues Club. Dulfer's studio album Candy store was released on 22 June 2007 by her new record company Heads up international. Almost all albums were produced by Red Bank Productions.
