Youssou N'Dour (born 1 October 1959 in Dakar) is a Senegalese singer, musician and politician. He helped to develop contemporary music in Senegal, especially a form called mbalax in the local Wolof language: a mix of traditional griot, percussion and praise singing, and Afro-Cuban arrangements and additions. He was Senegal's Minister of Tourism from April 2012 to September 2013. N'Dour, nicknamed 'the Nightingale of Dakar', started performing when he was 12. After a few years he was already performing regularly with the Star Band, the most popular group in Dakar in the early 1970s. In 1979 he formed his own band, Etoile de Dakar, which was renamed The Super Etoile after a few years. His early work with Etoile de Dakar reflects the typical Latin American style that was popular in Africa at the time. Later in the 80s he developed his own style with Super Etoile de Dakar, together with Jimi Mbaye on guitar, Habib Faye on bass, and Assane Thiam on drums. He set up his own recording studio Xippi, and his own record label Jololi. He also started Project Joko, with the aim of opening internet cafes in Africa and bringing the Senegalese community together around the world. To the western audience, N'Dour is best known for his collaborations with Peter Gabriel in 1986, with Neneh Cherry and with Wyclef Jean. He has also played and recorded with Sting, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Dido and Tracy Chapman.
