The Crusaders is an American band, which was especially well-known in the early 1970s. The group combined jazz, pop, rhythm and blues and soul in its music. The last members were Wilton Felder (saxophone) and Wayne Henderson (trombone). In 1954, Joe Sample (piano), Felder and Stix Hooper (drums) attended the same high school and together they started the group The Swingsters. Later, Henderson (trombone), Hubert Laws (flute) and Henry Wilson (bass guitar) joined the group and the band changed its name to The Modern Jazz Sextet. When Sample, Felder, Hooper and Henderson moved to Los Angeles in 1960, the band changed its name to The Jazz Crusaders. After the group signed a contract with Pacific Jazz Records in 1961, it became known during the 1960s mainly for its combination of jazz, pop, R&B and soul: the fusion of trombone and saxophone in the music became the trademark of the band in those years. In 1971, all the musicians were also busy with solo musical projects.
They also decided to call the group The Crusaders, which put less emphasis on the jazz aspect of the band. In the early seventies, the group was successful again, partly because Larry Carlton (guitar) played on the albums as a guest musician. In 1975, Henderson left the band to dedicate himself full-time to a career as a music producer: the sound of the band changed again as a result.
In 1979, the biggest hit was released, entitled Street Life. Randy Crawford was invited to take care of the vocals and the record became a world hit. In the Netherlands, the record became a hit in the three hit lists on the national pop channel at the time; the Dutch Top 40, the National Hit Parade and the TROS Top 50.
The record was sampled in 1996 by the French producer I:Cube in his hit Disco Cubizm. This made Crawford famous all over the world.
In 1983, Hooper also left the group. Around 1995, Henderson and Felder revived the band. The last studio album was recorded in 2003.
