Began taking piano lessons at the age of 6, then soon switched to the clarinet and at around 12 to the tenor saxophone. At William Paterson College in New Jersey he studied with Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid and Harold Mabern. After placing right behind Joshua Redman at the international Thelonius Monk saxophone competition in 1991, he began his professional career in Chicago with various organ trios, where he also recorded his debut album with Charles Earland. After moving to New York, he became a real whiz kid with an exclusive deal with High Note Records. He is now present on over 100 CD recordings.
