Brad started playing the piano at age 6 and studied classical piano until age 14. Brad performing with a school band when he was in high school in Connecticut.
He studied piano and composition at the famous Berklee College of Music and the New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music. Among his teachers were Kenny Werner, Junior Mance and Fred Hersch, the latter being the one who influenced him the most.
While studying at the New School for Social Research, drummer Jimmy Cobb invited him to join the band.
Mehldau played for two years with Joshua Redman, then with Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, and recorded with Wayne Shorter, John Scofield and Charles Lloyd.
In 1995 Mehldau formed his own trio, with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.
