"A never-ending intense narrative flow. Shipp is energetically close to Cecil Taylor. " Ljubisa Tosic writes about Matthew Shipp's solo concert at the festival in Saalfelden 2015: "Shipp sits at the piano and travels through his own story in the form of associations of old song forms. The magic of this game does not only stem from the song templates. It is the never-ending intensive narrative flow that mediates between tradition and modernity: a fragment of tenderness emerges, but becomes the starting point for free-tonal processing. Shipp is energetically close to Cecil Taylor. However, his play becomes individualized through deliberate variation of material, which he extrapolates contrapuntally or into gloomy harmony. A colorful journey through jazz history. " Matthew Shipp, b. 1960 in Delaware, lives in New York. Studied at the New England Conservatory with Ran Blake. Was a member of the David S. Ware Quartet - with whom he was a guest at the Kaleidophon in 1993. Directs own bands with Rob Brown, William Parker and Whit Dickey and plays with musicians like Ivo Perelman, Hamid Drake, Daniel Carter or Roscoe Mitchell.
