Roscoe Mitchell is as much an improviser of genius as a great conceptualist of jazz. The artist first became known through the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago where he still excels as a saxophonist.
This training, known for his playful energy and his attachment to the African-American culture, also allowed him to perfect a game based on "little instruments": recorders, whistles, bells ... This practice has generated a passion for musical collage, repetitions, silences and sound effects. As a result, Roscoe Mitchell has developed an approach and style at the confluences of free jazz and contemporary music. This curiosity, which drives him to hear everything and to be inspired by everything, also motivated the creation of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Based in Chicago, this organization aims to promote the meeting and creativity of free jazz and experimental jazz musicians to create "great black music". We find in this project all the intransigence and the capacity of inspiration of the immense Roscoe Mitchell. The "Duet" presented at the Skopje Jazz Festival in collaboration with Tyshawn Sorey will show us the full extent of the jazzman's talent. Photo © Paulo Borgia
