Rio-born Milton Nascimento grew up in the Brazilian rural town of Tres Pontas, where he began singing in his teens. His career truly took off in 1966 when singer Ellis Regina recorded one of his songs. The following year, the young singer-songwriter released Travessia, his first album. Recorded in the United States, the excellent Courage (1969) later introduced him to a larger audience. Nascimento's music brilliantly mixed jazz rhythms, African sounds, folk laments, and Latin-American hymns, a far cry from his country's traditional bossa nova. In 1986, the artist played a historical Festival concert alongside Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock. His discography includes Clube Da Esquina (1972), Anima (1982), Miltons (1989), Nascimento (1997). E a gente sonhando came out in 2010.
