Luther Allison was born on August 17, 1939 in Widener, Arkansas, the 14th child of a family of 15 siblings who grew up on a cotton farm. His parents decided to move to Chicago when he was ten, but he had already tasted the blues sounds before leaving Arkansas, played the church organ of his town and learned to sing gospel. Allison always said that the first blues feelings came from listening to the family radio in Arkansas, which was turned on all night thanks to his father. He always remembered hearing the Grand Ole Opry and B.B. King at the King Biscuit Show on Memphis WDIA Radio.
