The pianist and singer, Joe Turner, for five years, received from his father, the rudiments of that instrument perfecting his studies later hand Alma J. Thomas, wife of a renowned pianist Baltimore. In 1923 he produced his debut as a pianist and two years later he moved to New York where he obtained a contract to play at the "Barron Wilkins" with Hilton Jefferson and later with the orchestra of June Clark. Between 1928 and 1929, he acted in various New York clubs and in late 1929, he joined the orchestra of the great master of jazz, Benny Carter.Joe Turner, was until his death in 1990, the last representative of "Harlem stride piano"
