Born on March 11, 1996, in Greenville, South Carolina, Marcus King grew up immersed in music from the very beginning — his father, Marvin King, was a well-known local blues guitarist, and his grandfather was also a regionally popular musician. Marcus picked up the guitar almost as soon as he could walk, joined his father onstage at just eight years old, and by eleven was already playing guitar on his father's recordings.
In his teens, King formed his own band, balancing late-night club gigs with school — eventually leaving high school to pursue music full-time, later earning his GED. His band, The Marcus King Band, built a devoted following blending what they called "soul-influenced psychedelic Southern rock," releasing acclaimed albums including Soul Insight (2015), The Marcus King Band (2016), and Carolina Confessions (2018), which reached #2 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart.
Striking out as a solo artist, King teamed up with Black Keys co-founder Dan Auerbach to record El Dorado (2020), which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. He continued evolving with Young Blood (2022), a Rick Rubin-produced Mood Swings (2024), and 2025's Darling Blue, followed by its companion release No Room For Blue in 2026 — each record pushing further into a richly layered, genre-blurring sound rooted in blues but never confined by it.
