Clarence Gatemouth Brown appeared at the festival again on July 14 1977 accompanied by Billy Mitchell, Lloyd Glenn, George Duvivier and J.C. heard
Clarence Brown, known as Gatemouth, was a blues guitarist, violinist, singer and harmonica player, born in Vinton, Louisiana (USA), Moved to Texas at a very young age, his first influences were "western swing" and the big area bands. He began musically in bands in the San Antonio (Texas) area, where he settled, playing in a style very close to that of T-Bone Walker. He began, starting in 1947, to record a good number of albums in a very Californian rhythm and blues style.
In the early 1960s, he played Cajun music, with Buckwheat as pianist. He obtained great success in Europe from his presence at the 1971 Chicago Blues Festival and at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where he performed two shows on the same day, one with country music, and the other with blues, together with B.B.King. In the late 1980s, several recordings with Rounder Records and Alligator Records rediscovered him for the American public and made him a figure revered by the general public.
Based in Slidell, next to New Orleans, he miraculously survived Hurricane Katrina (2004), although he lost his house and his assets. He took refuge in his brother's house in Texas, where he died at the age of 81.
