Mavis Staples, gospel and soul singer born in 1940 in Chicago. Most of her career has been spent as a member of the group The Staple Singers. She was born in Chicago during the year 1940. From 1951 she was part of The Staple Singers along with Roebuck "Pops" Staples, Pervis Staples, Yvonne Staples and Cleotha Staples. In 1969 she began her solo career on Stax's subsidiary label Volt, she recorded her first self-titled album.
