This is the story of Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and his band, Black Oak Arkansas. Mangrum grew up in a town of 270 people, formed a band with a group of friends, dropped out of high school, and stole the school's PA system. When a judge sentenced Mangrum—a local troublemaker and long-haired hippie type—to a lengthy prison term, the band hid out in a cave in the Ozark Mountains before heading to Memphis to record their debut album. After his sentence was suspended, they changed their name from Knowbody Else to Black Oak Arkansas and recorded an album that went gold. Once Mangrum’s probation ended, they toured Europe and beyond, playing venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Madison Square Garden. According to Mangrum, Elvis Presley suggested they record the old R&B standard "Jim Dandy to the Rescue"; the song skyrocketed to the top of the charts, and the band went on to earn two more gold albums in the 1970s. Despite the band's ups and downs and Mangrum's personal struggles, at age 70, Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas are still touring and are currently finishing a new album.
