The musical “Heathcliff” is based on the novel “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë (one of the famous Brontë sisters). This novel was published in 1847, a year before the author’s death, and is Emily Brontë’s only work.
It should be noted, however, that only a small part of the long and intricate plotline of “Wuthering Heights” remains in the musical—the number of children and deaths has been drastically reduced. In the novel, after almost all the members of the first generation have passed away, the second generation seemingly begins to repeat the tragic story of the first. But they manage to avoid a tragic ending, and love triumphs. This motif is completely absent from the musical.
