In 1968, the British rock band The Who were searching for a hit that would propel them to the top of the musical Olympus.
At the time, the rockers had only three singles to their credit and needed a good, fresh idea to keep the band alive. Pete Townshend found inspiration in the Indian mystic Meher Baba, who had maintained a vow of silence since 1925. Meher inspired him to create a character named Tommy – a “blind, deaf, and mute guy” with supernatural powers. The Who were at a loss and were dejected when they began recording the album. But the result exceeded all expectations…
