Description: Frank Zappa's music has never been considered mainstream. His songs were rarely played on the radio. For some, he was known primarily as a political activist, and only then as a musician. At times he was an enigma, a rebel or an individualist, his music and his life focused on social commentary, opinions not always popular with the establishment, and he respected those who cared about society and freedom. Director Alex Winter is perhaps best known as Bill in the Bill & Ted films and as a successful documentary filmmaker. This time, he turns his attention to the career and life of Frank Zappa, and much more. We hear the musicians who made up The Mothers of Invention, including Steve Wye, Bank Gardner, Ian Underwood, and the emotional Ruth Underwood. We also hear famous rock and roll fan Pamela de Barr and Frank's wife Gale. This is an unusual film in the sense that it not only tracks the chronology of Frank's career, but also his views on everything. Alex Winter, as a director, did an excellent job with a two-hour film, while in reality there would be enough material for 4 episodes.
"I was really amazed at who he [Frank]was and the extraordinary life he led," Winter said. “He was not only a brilliant musician and composer, but he was also very passionate about the time in which he lived. He was very active politically and socially, in terms of public awareness and civic engagement. Due to the Internet and some cultural changes, I also felt that we are living in a period where someone like Frank Zappa may be even more comprehensible now than he was in his day. "
What really makes the film special is that it was made with the approval of Akhmet's mother and Frank's late wife, Gail. This gave Winter access to hundreds of rare and intimate recordings made by Frank, most of which had never been heard or seen before. Once Winter got the right to tell this movie story, it took him and his team several years to investigate and preserve Zappa's vault. Once we entered the repository and began to understand what was there, everyone was incredibly intrigued, "said Winter, who also launched a Kickstarter campaign to preserve endangered materials in Zappa's vault. The campaign has gathered nearly 10,000 sponsors and collected over 1.1 million dollars.
