Wacken Open Air (W: O: A) is the world's largest heavy music festival held annually on the outskirts of Waken, in northern Germany. WOA, or more often simply "Wacken" is the largest and unofficially considered the main metal event in the World. In 2006, the number of visitors to this event exceeded 60 thousand. Currently, Waken receives more than 200 thousand visitors annually.
The festival was first held in 1990, with the participation of local little-known groups, but every year its popularity grew and by 1998 Wacken became a festival of European and then world-class.
The modern Wacken Open Air is held on the first weekend of August each year and officially lasts three days (four in fact). Seven (sometimes eight) scenes are set up, with over 80 musical groups from around the world performing.
During the preparation of W: O: A 2012, a record was set: all 75 thousand tickets for the festival were sold out on November 29, 2011, 247 days before its opening. Which was beaten during the preparation of W: O: A 2013 on September 21, 2012. In 2013, all tickets were sorted out in two days, and in 2014 SOLD OUT occurred already 12 hours after the tickets were on sale.
