Making a documentary about the singer, poet, artist who replies to the name of Patti Smith is not an easy task. It is not enough to resume one or more concerts, record some interviews and with this claim to have made a portrait of the character. In fact, Steven Sebring, a professional photographer and director of fashion spots, is not limited to routine.
He declares, and in the documentary it can be seen, that he has been totally lost in admiration for Patti to the point of following her for years in debt to be able to realize this work that all fans of Smith (but not only) should be able to see. The result is a complex personality (sweet and hard at the same time) that is shown in the multiplicity of its facets. Patti begins by telling his life as a list (it is she who affirms it) of fortune and misfortune.
A bit like the life of each of us but with the diversity of a creativity that leads her to be both attentive and admiring mother of Rimbaud. The muse of the intellectual America of the Seventies has not been lost, like many of its generation, in a self-referential solipsism. This documentary shows it and demonstrates it. Perhaps because Patti never forgets what Allan Ginsberg wrote to her during a grave loss: "Leave those who died on their journey and you return to affirm your passion for life".
