The history of Gnawa Diffusion is inseparable from that of Amazigh Kateb. Son of the famous Algerian writer Kateb Yacine, he left his native country for France following the forced exile of his illustrious father.
Uprooted, he nevertheless retained a real attachment to the Maghreb and more particularly to its music, from chaâbi to raï and obviously including gnawa. From this musical genre inherited from the descendants of sub-Saharan slaves, he borrowed his favorite instrument, the guembri, but also a fierce desire to mix influences to bring out something new.
Reggae, Hip-Hop, Rock or even... Brassens feature throughout the 30-year career of the Grenoble band. But if the music of Gnawa Diffusion is good to listen to on record, wait to see what it sounds like live, because once on stage, the Kateb band is far from sparing its efforts!
