Returning to the blues, Shemekia Copeland sings today. Born Charon Shemekia Copeland in 1979 in Harlem, New York, daughter of the legendary Texan guitarist Johnny Copeland, she began to develop her professional career during her early teens, displaying a powerful voice very suitable for soul and in the vein of Koko Taylor and Etta James. Her father encouraged her to sing from the age of 8, taking her to the Cotton Club during her performances and bringing her up on stage. By the time she was 16 she was already opening for the bluesman on tour, and she had made a name for herself on the blues circuit. She signed her contract with Alligator at just 19 years of age, and that year she released her debut album 'Turn The Heath Up!'. From then on she had more publicity and toured the US and Europe.
