Sananda Maitreya is the current name of the musician more popularly known as Terence Trent D'arby (New York, March 15, 1962). Sananda rose to fame under his stage name, Terence Trent D'arby, taken from his birth name (which he slightly modified), in the late '80s, blending his strong Soul influences with creative experimentation that included genres such as Funk, Hard rock or Rock, as well as Pop, or nuances of Psychedelia, all of it tinged with a halo of mysticism and a predominance of a vocal register with a strong influence from Sam Cooke, as well as self-producing his works and performing most part of the instruments. D'Arby legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in the late 1990s, following a personal and spiritual crisis. Its greatest boom took place in the period from the end of the 1980s to the mid-1990s.
