Shemekia Copeland. Born Charon Shemekia Copeland in 1979 in Harlem, New York, daughter of the legendary Texan guitarist Johnny Copeland, she began to develop her professional career during her early teens, displaying a powerful voice very suitable for soul and in the vein of Koko Taylor and Etta James. Her father encouraged her to sing from the age of 8, taking her to the Cotton Club during her performances and bringing her up on stage. By the time she was 16 she was already opening for the bluesman on tour, and she had made a name for herself on the blues circuit. He signed his contract with Alligator when he was only 19 years old, and that year he released his debut album "Turn The Heath Up!'. From then on he had more publicity and toured the US and Europe. In 2000 he released 'Wicked', where Featured in a duet with one of her heroines, early R&B diva Ruth Brown, the album earned her a host of WC Handy Award nominations, winning three: Song of the Year, Blues Album of the Year, and Contemporary Female Artist. His next record, 'Talking To Strangers', was produced by legendary pianist Dr John, and he has continued to tour and release records for Alligator and Telarc to this day.
Recital that she offered at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2013.
