Since 1977, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival (Basque Country, Spain) has been held in July. In its first editions, the festival lasted two days. Little by little it grew and in 1981, it began to welcome great stars such as Oscar Peterson and Muddy Waters. Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie with Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and Jaco Pastorius would follow. Since 1995, the Jazz Festival has lasted for a full week: 7 consecutive days of jazz at the Mendizorrotza Sports Center, which contains quality acoustics.
In 1990, in its 14th edition, and parallel to the concerts at the Sports Center, the 21st Century Jazz section begins, as an opportunity for new promises and in which Noa, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Esperanza Spalding and the sadly deceased, Thomas Chapin or Esbjörn Svensson.
