The Nighthawks formed in the Spring of 1972 in Washington DC dedicated to a recreation of American Roots Music: Blues, Rockabilly, Soul and everything else. By mid 1974 the personnel solidified and the band recorded ROCK AND ROLL for the D.C. label Alladin with label mates Danny Gatton and Bobby Radcliff. A second release, OPEN ALL NIGHT, was released in 1976 to national critical acclaim. It was an all classic Blues album. The band began touring , first Boston to Atlanta, then in 1978 to Chicago, Denver, Austin and New Orleans, and finally with a self titled release on Mercury, to Seattle and San Diego in 1980. By 1983 the band had toured Japan and in 1984 began frequent visits to Northern Europe. Along the way The Nighthawks established musical friendships that led to collaborations like the 1978 album, JACKS AND KINGS, with the band backing members of the great Muddy Waters Band of the late 1970s and HOT TRACKS, backing John Hammond. the band also brought many top Blues acts like Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, Fenton Robinson and Big Walter Horton, to DC, backing them up, as well as introducing D.C. audiences to The Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Robert Cray.
With the departure of guitarist Jimmy Thackery in 1986, the band became a Rosebud Agency East Coast back up band for Elvin Bishop, Pinetop Perkins and John Lee Hooker
