Former students of Sciences Po then journalists at Libération and Midi Libre, David Ausseil and Charles-Henry Contamine, both 26 years old, traveled up the Mississippi in the footsteps of the blues. At each stage of the black migration of the beginning of the century, in the Delta cotton fields as well as in the streets of Memphis and the northern ghettos, they met the illustrious or anonymous musicians celebrating a reinvented tradition. At each stop, from New Orleans to Chicago, they followed the steps of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters or B.B. King, to revive the memory of eternal music. The Blues Route takes you all along this America, overwhelmed but sublime. Author of multiple works relating to music, dance and the arts, Denis Chapoullié has seen his work exhibited many times in France and abroad. This thirty-eight-year-old photographer, a regular collaborator of Libération, reveals here a penetrating writing: that of a great landscape and portraitist reporter.
