For 25 years Lettuce have been chasing around furious funk jams on stages all over the world. Their passion seems miles away from their chic background: the band members met at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. This classy background translates into having perfect control of their instruments, but never does Lettuce sound clinical or 'made-up'. Driven by Erick ‘E.D.’ Coomes’ pulsating bass they play straight from the underbelly, not from their learned minds. Album titles like Get Greasy are telling enough. And if they do lift their foot off the gas, hypnotic pieces like Phyllis arise, described as “chill-hop” by drummer Adam Deitch. The seven-member band is equally inspired by exciting funk as by classical psychedelia and 1990s hip hop. It all comes together effortlessly on their latest studio album Crush (2015), although Lettuce only truly comes alive during their explosive live shows.
