152 Bleecker Street (basement) The Cafe au Go Go was an oasis for folk, jazz, comedy, blues and rock music. The club was the first New York headquarters of the Grateful Dead, and Joni Mitchell. Richie Havens and the new blues projects were regular every week. Jimi Hendrix sat down to play blues with harmonica player James Cotton in 1968. Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Howlin 'Wolf, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, John Hammond, Jr., The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Chambers Brothers, played there. Blues legends such as Lightnin 'Hopkins, Son House, Skip James, Bukka White, and Big Joe Williams performed at the club after being "rediscovered" in the 1960s. "Andy Warhol's world premiere, HARLOT (harlot), took place on January 10, 1965 here.

Comedian Lenny Bruce and club owner Howard Solomon were arrested here on obscenity charges in 1964.
