Singer, guitarist and composer. Jimmy Burns is a contemporary Blues musician, combining its Mississippi Delta roots with R & B, making their own sound. Burns is a charismatic actor with an expressive, soulful voice and a style of melodic guitar. With a keen musical sense has created a lively style that has won critical acclaim both the US and abroad.
Born in Dublin, Mississippi in 1943, Burns was fascinated by music from the beginning. He loved the sounds coming out of the church and blues clubs he heard on the streets. Burns sang in church and learned to play the guitar when he was still in the Mississippi Delta. One of his particular favorites was Lightnin 'Hopkins, his older brother and famous Detroit "Bluesman" Eddie Burns, is also a guitarist who played with John Lee Hooker, years before embarking on their own.
Burns was 12 when his family moved to Chicago. The year he was singing with a gospel group called Gay Lites.
Secular music also beckoned. Living in the Near North Side of Chicago, he became involved in the music of The Impressions and Major Lance, rehearsing in a park near his home. In 1959, at the age of 16 he joined The Medallionaires, a group established vocally, and made some recordings. Burns was also part of the folk scene of the 60s.
