Fird Eaglin Jr. was born in New Orleans on January 21, 1936, and as a child was blind because of glaucoma and the first thing he touched was a ukulele with rubber cords gave him. He stuck to the radio, then moved to guitar, he learned to play by ear. Precisely he took his stage name, Snooks, in tribute to a radio character named Baby Snooks. He went to the Louisiana School for the Blind in Baton Rouge, but at age 14 left school to pursue music professionally.
