Raised in several countries in South America, Hector moved to Chicago and played with Lonnie Brooks (Alligator Records), and so experienced first-hand the Chicago blues scene, backing up Freddie King, Fenton Robinson, and many others. After moving to Knoxville he worked on TNN's “I 40 Paradise” and “Pickin at the Paradise” music series, performing with literally hundreds of country, pop and Americana artists.
In 1985 formed the hq band, which has won numerous “Best of...” awards in the area and released 5 recordings. In 2007 he put out his first solo acoustic record, “Wherever you go,” which also features SGMA’s Studio Musician of the Year David Johnson and Mark Fain of Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder. His acoustic music, both vocal and instrumental, spans styles from blues to bluegrass, with folk, gospel, and even a bit of Cuban son thrown into the mix. As Bluegrass Unlimited put it, “The songs of Hector Qirko are refreshing in that they offer something much deeper than just another rehashing of standard bluegrass warhorses.” He continues to perform and record with the hq band, as well as singer-songwriter RB Morris and the swing and honkytonk band Lonesome Coyotes.
